Proper installation is as important as choosing the right water purifier. A well-installed purifier works efficiently and safely for years. A poorly installed one can cause leaks, poor water quality, and premature filter failure. This guide covers everything you need to know about installing a home water purifier in India.
Before Installation: What to Check
Before your purifier arrives, check these at your home: Water pressure — most RO purifiers require minimum 10 PSI (0.7 kg/cm²) of water pressure. Low pressure is common in upper floors of apartments. If pressure is low, a booster pump will be needed. Power outlet — wall-mounted purifiers need a 5-amp earthed power socket within 1 metre of the installation point. Drain access — RO purifiers produce reject water (typically 1–2 litres per litre purified). This needs to connect to a drain pipe or sink drain.
Choosing the Right Location
The ideal installation location for an under-sink or wall-mounted RO purifier is under the kitchen sink or on the kitchen wall adjacent to the sink. Requirements: proximity to inlet water supply, proximity to drain, proximity to power outlet, adequate wall space and load-bearing capacity for wall mounting, and away from direct sunlight and heat sources that degrade filter media.
Counter-top purifiers simply sit on the counter and connect to the tap with a diverter — much easier to install but take up counter space.
Professional vs DIY Installation
Most quality water purifiers (including all Alkin models) come with free professional installation. This is strongly recommended because: the technician tests incoming water pressure and recommends booster pump if needed, they ensure all connections are leak-free and meet plumbing standards, they calibrate the TDS settings for your input water, and they register the product warranty and walk you through filter replacement schedules.
DIY installation is possible for experienced individuals using the provided installation kit and manual, but any leaks from improper connections can damage your kitchen or cause mould problems — making professional installation a worthwhile assurance.
Step-by-Step Installation Overview
1. Identify and shut off the water supply to the inlet tap. 2. Install the tap adapter/diverter on the supply line. 3. Mount the purifier unit on the wall (for wall-mounted models) using the provided bracket. 4. Connect the inlet tubing from supply to purifier. 5. Connect the outlet tubing from purifier to the provided purified water tap (installed separately on the sink). 6. Connect the reject water tube to the drain. 7. Connect power and turn on supply water. 8. Flush the system for 30 minutes before first use — this removes preservatives from new membranes and filters. 9. Test output water TDS to confirm purification is working correctly.
Post-Installation Checks
After installation, perform these checks daily for the first week: check all connections for drips, monitor tank fill time (should fill within 2–4 hours for a standard 10L tank), verify the auto-shutoff activates when tank is full, and taste the output water (should be clean with no chemical taste). Contact Alkin's customer support or your installation technician immediately if you notice any issues.
Maintenance Schedule After Installation
Set calendar reminders: Pre-filters (sediment + carbon): every 3–6 months. RO membrane: every 2–3 years. UV lamp: every 12 months. Post-carbon: every 12 months. Mineral/alkaline cartridge: every 6–12 months. Tank cleaning: every 12 months. Alkin offers maintenance reminder SMS/WhatsApp notifications and AMC packages to keep your purifier running at peak performance. Register your Alkin purifier to activate your warranty and get maintenance reminders.
