Most people use their water purifier daily but rarely think about its health until something goes obviously wrong. The problem is that a purifier can fail gradually, providing less and less protection while looking perfectly fine externally. These 8 signs tell you it is time to call for service immediately.
Sign 1: Slow Flow Rate or Reduced Output
If your purifier takes much longer to fill a glass than it used to, or the storage tank takes many hours to fill, this is often the first sign of a clogged pre-filter or a failing RO membrane. A sediment filter that is overdue for replacement restricts flow as it fills with particles. Do not ignore slow flow — it reduces your purifier's daily output and means your family may turn to unfiltered alternatives when the tank runs dry.
Sign 2: Unusual Taste or Odour
If purified water has a strange taste — metallic, bitter, chlorine-like, or earthy — this is a serious warning sign. A saturated carbon filter no longer removes chlorine or organic compounds, allowing them to pass through and affect taste. A depleted mineral cartridge can make water taste flat or slightly acidic. Bacterial growth in a stale filter or dirty storage tank produces musty or earthy odours. Any taste change means service is urgently needed.
Sign 3: High Output TDS
Check your purified water TDS with a TDS meter (Rs 300 from any online store). If your RO purifier's output TDS has risen significantly from its previous level — especially if it's now above 200 ppm when it used to be 80–150 ppm — the RO membrane is deteriorating and its rejection efficiency is dropping. A failing membrane provides less and less protection with each litre produced.
Sign 4: Leaking Water
Any visible water leaking from connections, the purifier body, or fittings is an immediate service call. Beyond wasting water, leaks create mould risk under sinks, can short-circuit electronics in the purifier, and indicate that connections have loosened (often because of water pressure fluctuations common during summer in Indian cities).
Sign 5: Loud or Unusual Noises
A healthy purifier operates quietly. Unusual sounds — gurgling, banging, clicking, or a motor that runs continuously without the tank filling — indicate problems. Continuous motor running often means the auto-shutoff float switch has failed and the pump is running dry. Loud gurgling can indicate blocked drain lines. These issues worsen rapidly if ignored.
Sign 6: UV Lamp Indicator Light
Most UV purifiers have an indicator light showing UV lamp status. If this light is off or red/amber, the UV lamp has reached end-of-life and is not sterilizing water effectively. UV lamps typically last 12 months and should be replaced annually regardless of visual appearance — a UV lamp can appear lit while no longer providing adequate UV dose for sterilization.
Sign 7: Tank Takes Too Long to Fill After Use
If you notice the storage tank takes 3–4 hours to fill after emptying when it previously took 1–2 hours, the RO membrane or pre-filters are restricting flow. This can also indicate low water pressure at the inlet — check if other taps in the house have normal pressure.
Sign 8: Filter Replacement Date Has Passed
The simplest sign of all: if you cannot remember when you last changed your filters, they almost certainly need changing. Pre-filters need replacement every 3–6 months. The RO membrane every 2–3 years. UV lamp every 12 months. Carbon post-filter every 12 months. Mineral cartridge every 6–12 months. Running a purifier with expired filters is worse than no purifier — a clogged carbon filter actually becomes a bacterial breeding ground that can contaminate your purified water.
